Havelock Historical
Collection
Historical records in the possession of the author will one day be
donated to the permanent collection of one of the libraries of the
University of North Carolina system. Hundreds of documents and
photographs collected by the author over several decades, including the
material on which the book is based, will be preserved.
The final selection of the location of the Havelock Historical
Collection will hinge on two factors: the resources the chosen
university offers in the care and cataloguing of the material and the
ease of its availability to both researchers and the interested public.
A limited amount of the material related to Cherry Point is now in the
permanent collection of the Joyner Library at East Carolina
University, Greenville, N.C. It is listed there as the Edward
Barnes Ellis, Jr. Papers.
Mr. Ellis believes his entire collection belongs to the citizens of the
Havelock area and must be preserved for future generations.
Many of the documents, artifacts and photographs now in the hands of the
author have been contributed by local individuals and families.
All donated material is labeled by source. Contributions related
to the Havelock area and eastern Craven County are welcome.
All material will be considered. Of particular interest are
pre-Cherry Point family histories and genealogies, portraits, journals,
diaries, deeds, brochures, publications, maps and business records.
Also sought are early photos, especially of people, events, economic
activity and local buildings, such as churches, schools and stores.
Provisions for the copying and of photographs and documents can be made
at no expense to the donor.
Any reader wishing to consider a contribution of historical
material to be permanently preserved in the collection is urged to write
to Havelock Historical Collection, 7001 Jeffrey Drive, Raleigh, N.C.
27603 or by email at
ebe@edwardellis.com.
